As part of the worldwide introduction of VIS, effective 02 November 2015, Indian citizens applying for a Schengen visa must appear in person to provide biometric data (fingerprints and digital photography). The other procedures remain the same as usual, with no changes to the visa fee, visa application form, etc.

For subsequent applications to Schengen countries (after the first application effective 02 November 2015) within the next 5 years, applicants do not need to appear in person for biometrics. However, it must be noted that if there is reasonable doubt regarding the applicant’s identity, the consulate may require fingerprint collection again within the specified 5-year period. The database of all biometric data (photos & fingerprints) will be stored for only 5 years.

Details on how the system will work will be communicated later. It is yet to be clarified whether we need to first submit the application, after which VFS will provide an appointment, or if we need to schedule an appointment through their website.
